SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics)






The Iberia Parish Sheriffs Office's Special Weapons And Tactics Team (SWAT) has provided a ready response to situations in Iberia Parish that were beyond the capabilities of normally equipped and trained deputies.  The Departments SWAT team consists of a small group of highly trained and disciplined deputies that are faced with varied, multi-faceted missions.  They respond to extremely dangerous situations that include responding to barricaded subjects, serving high risk arrest / search warrants, confronting suicidal individuals, hostage rescue, maritime interdiction, mobile assaults, dignitary protection, search and rescue, and hurricane relief operations.  The SWAT team has also been called upon in times of civil unrest and to assist jail personnel with searches of inmates and dormitories within the jail.

The SWAT team consists of an all-volunteer group from multiple divisions within the department to include Patrol, K-9, Detectives, Narcotics, and Water Patrol.  Members are selected based on their background and law enforcement expertise as well as being able to handle themselves in stressful situations.  Applicants must be sworn Iberia Parish Sheriff Office deputies.  Applicants must be physically fit, agile, and be able to accomplish tasks under stressful conditions.  To remain on the team members must routinely qualify with weapons and physical proficiency.  Members train twice a month to further enhance their capabilities and expertise.  Team members have trained with various agencies, Federal, State, and local, all over the United States.  The SWAT team also consists of an element of four deputies highly trained in hostage negotiations. These deputies have completed training certifying them in negotiating with individuals in high stress.

In 2009 the SWAT team was called upon fourteen times to deploy and handle high-risk situations.  Members from the SWAT team also called upon by the United States Marshal Service to participated in operation FALCON.  This was an operation in which members were sworn in as Deputy US Marshals in order to serve high risk arrest warrants all over the state of Louisiana. This operation was a nationwide mission that resulted in the capture of 35,190 dangerous fugitive felons.

Members are on standby ready to deploy at a moments notice anywhere within the parish of Iberia and utilize their unique skills in support of unusual situations that may confront patrol personnel.
