FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 5, 2014 – Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal reports that following an investigation by detectives with the Bureau of Investigation into the hostage standoff which occurred on the afternoon of December 4, Thomas Joseph Chevalier, 31 of New Iberia was charged with Second Degree Battery, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Rape, False Imprisonment and Violation of a Protective Order.Through investigation it was learned that Chevalier broke into the victim’s residence prior to her arrival at approximately 1:00 AM on December 4.Following the victim’s arrival at the residence, Chevalier battered the victim and sexually assaulted her. The victim was able to text message a friend at approximately 1:00 PM on December 4 who in turn notified the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office of the situation. Following the arrest of the suspect at approximately 4:30 PM on December 4, the victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released.
The incident remains under investigation.
