A Message From The Sheriff
As Sheriff of Iberia Parish, one
of my chief responsibilities is the operations of the Iberia Parish Jail. When I first took office in 2008 the Parish Jail was in a state of
disrepair.The majority of the
laundry equipment did not work; inmates were allowed to smoke inside of the
facility. There was not even a fence
surrounding the jail to keep inmates from escaping.
The first step I took was to
implement a new administration at the jail to oversee its day to day operations.I then made the Iberia Parish Government aware of the neglect at the
facility.I soon realized that tax
dollars which were supposed to be allocated for the jail were not being put
directly back into the facility.
Therefore, I ended a maintenance contract with the Iberia Parish Council that
was put into place by the previous administration. The expenditures are now
being itemized and the Iberia Parish Government is responsible for the cost.
There have been several personal
changes in the jail's administration since I first took office. This is due to my requiring the jail being operated as if it was a
successful business. The citizens of Iberia Parish expect professionalism from
me as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in the Parish. As a result, I expect my
deputies to be productive and an asset to the Sheriff's Office. If I see the
jail is not running up to my standards, I will take the necessary steps to make
sure it is.Because of this
philosophy I am now proud to say that with the implementation of a new staff and
hard work, the Iberia Parish Jail is now in compliance with basic jail
guidelines required by the Department of Safety and Corrections.
Improvements at the Iberia Parish
Jail are just an example of the changes I have made within the Iberia Parish
Sheriff's Office.It is falls in
line with my overall goal of making Iberia Parish a safer place for our
community to live and work.
