The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Training Division is staffed by a training director, officer administrator, two staff instructors, two firearms instructors and two part-time firearms instructor. In 2009, the Training Division conducted annual in-service training for more than 300 Sheriff’s Office employees. The In-Service Training consist of Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED, Legal Update, Use of Force, Domestic Violence, Harassment in the Workplace, Fingerprinting, Defensive Driving, OC certification, Taser certification, Defensive Tactics, Accident Scene Management and Pursuit Termination Techniques. All enforcement deputies recently completed the Pursuit Termination Techniques Class which covered the use of Spike Strips, Stationary Roadblocks, Moving Roadblocks and the Pursuit Termination Technique.
The Training Division operates a 279 Hour P.O.S.T. Correctional Academy. The academy certifies correctional officers at P.O.S.T. Level 2 qualifications which allow the officer to work as an armed correctional officer and receive state supplemental pay. Deputies and officers from throughout south central Louisiana are eligible to attend the seven week academy which is held three times a year.
The Training Division hosts many specialized courses throughout the year such as, The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Child Safety Seat Installation Technician Class, Regional K-9 conference, Louisiana Domestic Violence Conference, National Incident Management System Training and Women’s Self Defense. The training staff also instructs the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Hunter Education Course.
The Training Division hosted six full courses in 2009, averaging more than thirty students per class. Due to the demand, the number of Hunter Education Courses will be doubled in 2010.
